Lawn Mower Safety
For an activity so common to everyone it’s truly amazing how many people are injured each year doing a simple task in their yards. Lawn mowing is a dangerous activity, if not the most dangerous activity you can pursue at home. Every single year over 70 000 people are sent to the hospital in the United States from lawn mower accidents, 10% of those are children. Here are 10 ways you can avoid being part of that horrible statistic:
-
Do not allow any child under 16 to use a ride on lawn mower. No child under 12 should use any type of mower.
-
Always wear strong shoes that cover your toes. Never cut the grass with sandals, your toes are very important.
-
Wear and use eye and ear protection. Objects can whip out of lawnmower at lighting speeds and ricochet off other objects into your face. Ear protection is vital if your going to be using the mower for extended periods of time. Lawn mowers can produce 95 decibels of sounds much higher then needed to damage your hearing.
-
Never mow backwards or towards yourself. If you were to fall the mower could possibly continue moving towards you.
-
Never take passengers on ride on mowers.
-
Use a mower that requires the operator to constantly be pushing on the operator clutch. If you ever lose control, the lawn mower will cease operations.
-
Make sure no one is near you as you mow, as objects can be lethal towards not just you but others nearby.
-
Do not wear lose clothing as it may catch should you be near the mower.
-
If you are to do any maintenance on the blade or under body of the mower, then remove the sparkplug before you do anything.
-
Always fuel your lawn mower in an open space, which is well ventilated, and use a funnel to prevent any burns or explosions.
-
Always look over the area your about to mow for any toys or large pieces of wood which may snap and become projectiles. This will keep your neighbours safe and your lawn mower working more efficiently.
-
Make sure to read your models operating manual and understand just how it works and all it’s safety measures that are in place.
-
Make sure that your mower discharge is pointed away from objects that may be damaged by projectiles such as windows or vehicles.
-
Never go across on a steep slope with a riding lawn mower.
-
Do not mow your grass when the grass is still wet. You are more likely to slip and your mower is more likely to become clogged.
-
All these points are common sense written down. Think before you act and you’ll stay safe.
